No, it’s not the name of a new Tim Burton movie. Mad Hippie and drunk Elephant are two emerging skin care lines that you can find at your local skin care or mall anchor store.
These two brands want to make a better product that is healthier for your skin and better for the environment. So let’s see if it’s better to be mad or drunk by comparing Drunk elephant vs Mad Hippie.
I want to introduce each brand and then compare mad Hippie and Drunk elephant face creams, serums and a selection of their other most popular products so you can find the best skin care products for your skin.

A look at Mad Hippie
On Mad Hippie’s website there is a fun quiz for you to take if you aren’t sure of your skin type. This is great because your skin can change from season to season as the weather changes, or after big life events like having a baby. At these times you’ll need to think about changing the kind of skin care you use so the quiz can offer you some great advice on the current best skin care products to suit your skin care needs.
Mad Hippie offer a range of skin care products, makeup and kits of skin care products suited to particular skin types.
Under skin care you can pick between individual products or get sets that contain an assortment of products for your skin type, if you really like them. There were 19 options (individual and sets combined) that I counted on their website. They had quite a few things on sale, which you know tricks you into wanting to just buy it. Good game Mad Hippie, good game.
The brand also promises that $1 of every web sale will go towards conservation projects and helping to reduce their downstream waste. They also list all of the charities they support. So you can feel better about supporting their cause. The best part for me is that they usually offer a 60 day money back, no questions asked, the container can be empty guarantee.
Who are Drunk Elephant
Drunk elephant is a skin care brand that was created by Tiffany Masterson before later being sold to Shiseido. Tiffany’s vision was to create a collection of skin care products that would actually really help alleviate skin issues she experienced, including combo, oily, sensitive skin, rosacea, visible pores and other common skin issues.
Tiffany found that there were 6 ingredients commonly found in skin care products that were likely to irritate peoples skin. She couldn’t find any products that didn’t have at last one of these ingredients in so instead she developed her own drunk elephant products.
The name drunk elephant comes from a mythical story that says elephant used to eat Marula tree fruit and that this fruit reacted in their stomachs and made them drunk.
I have personally tried Drunk Elephant and really enjoy the products completely, especially because they help your skin maintain a balance ph level. Let’s see what they offer on their website.
Drunk Elephant definitely offers a whole range of items to literally cover you from head to toe that include body care, hair care, skin care, gifts and many more. They really care about you and your skin, and make every product as gentle and safe for you as possible.
They are very transparent about what ingredients do, and do not, go into their products, similar to the skincare brand Dermalogica but even more gluten free and natural.
Drunk Elephant vs Mad hippie Face Cream comparison
First let’s take a look at Drunk Elephant’s lovely Lola Retro Whipped Cream. This replenishing moisturiser has been formulated using 6 African oils and ceramides from plants. I love the luscious, silky, creamy and thick formula that is really hydrating without feeling sticky on your skin.
Omega acids, plantain, antioxidant green tea are all used in the ingredients list and the formula really does work well on dry skin, especially during the colder months when my face becomes really dry.
This cream isn’t as tasty as whipped cream but it comes in a similar container, making it a little difficult to know when your running low, but I’m sure you’ll love the formula if you love thick intensive long lasting moisturisers.
Let’s compare the Lala retro whipped cream with Mad Hippie’s advanced skin care face cream offering. Aloe leaf juice, acai, argan oil, safflower seed oil and a whole load of peptides power this formula. When compared with Drunk elephants face cream this is a much thinner cream that absorbs gently into your skin but still offers plenty of goodness and moisture to help protect your skin throughout the day.
The scent coming from the container is quite overpowering but fades away once you’ve massaged the mixture into your skin. This product is usually a little cheaper than Drunk elephants but choosing between them really comes down to whether you prefer the deep, thick moisturising qualities of the lala reto whipped cream of prefer the thinner easily absorbed face cream formula from Mad hippie.
Mad hippie and Drunk elephant Face Serum comparison
Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum has an intensive vitamin C formula for daytime use. This serum won a best of beauty award in 2018 but hasn’t been in stock recently.
It’s powerful antioxidant formula consists of a blend of L-ascorbic acid, ferulic acid and Vitamin E. Your skin should look brighter and appear firmer, which helps to make your skin look a little younger.
The C-Firma formula works to melt away dead skin cells and then deeply moisturise by offering an oily protective layer. Both Pumpkin ferment and pomegranate extract are also include in this day serum.
Mad Hippie’s Vitamin C Serum is an all natural vegan, cruelty free face serum that is perfect for reducing blemishes, dark spots and the redness that appears with dry skin. This formula has been rated very safe and uses a mixture of the following natural ingredients: vitamin C, grapefruit, hyaluronic acid, aloe leaf and chamomile flower extract.
The high vitamin C complex works alongside your skins natural collagen to create and protect your skins natural barrier. Chamomile is an ingredient i love to find in my face care products because it has antibacterial properties, especially when fighting spots or blemishes.
Chamomile extract can also helps fight those free radicals and slow down the effect they have on our skins ageing process.
What Kits do Drunk Elephant and Mad Hippie offer
Drunk Elephant’s The Polypeptide Kit includes the following products:
1 – 50ml polypeptide cream, 10ml retinol cream, 22 g butter cleanser, 5ml intensive hydration serum, 1.7 g bamboo booster and a compact mirror.

For me the highlight of this bundle is the Polypeptide cream which is a protein moisturiser with amino acids. Drunk elephant claim sensitive skin is usually made worse, or even begins in the first place due to the additives and ingredients used in a lot of skin and eye care products.
Firstly, this polypeptide cream doesn’t have any added fragrance because the ingredients list that includes a signal peptide complex, nine different amino acid peptides, Pygmy waterlilly stem cell extract and soybean folic acid ferment extract, has been created to be good to even the most sensitive skin.
This isn’t a thick formula moisturiser and it feels like you are applying a much thinner serum.

Mad Hippie offer The Skin Brightening Routine kit that includes vitamin C serum, exfoliating serum, face cream and their hydrating nutrient mist. My favourite product in this collection is the hydrating nutrient mist.
I always think of a mist as being a quick chance to soak a little moisture into my dry skin but this product offers more than just wet skin. The ingredients list is impressive and includes Hesperidin, the humectant sodium PCA, Ginkgo Biloba, green tea, white pine bark and pomegranate seed extract. This mixture of antioxidants, humectants and hyaluronic acid works on reducing any discolouration on your skin while also adding moisture.
With so many ingredients the mist is quite thick and you may find it easier to apply by putting it onto your hand and then massaging onto your skin.
Which brand do you prefer – Mad Hippie Or Drunk Elephant
Well it seems overall Mad Hippie gets you the most bang for your buck. The sizes are bigger and the prices are lower. Drunk Elephant really puts emphasis about what goes into their products, though Mad Hippie also posts all of their ingredients on their website.
Though I do love Drunk Elephant, I prefer Mad Hippie, I love everything about their natural formulas and creative packaging designs. The lala retro whipped cream moisturiser is my favourite product, I love the thick creamy formula that contains so many beautiful natural ingredients and is a pleasure to apply. just be sure not to use a soft makeup brush to apply it because it will absorb all the formula.
Which of these 2 brands you choose, I’m sure you’ll enjoy applying their skin care products and enjoying all the different natural ingredients they both use in their formulas.
