This article is my review of Tanologist, an introduction to who the brand are and what kind of self-tanning products they have created.
I will also show you a Tanologist review of their different products including their popular self tan spray, Tanologist water, Tanologist drops and Tanologist mousse.
Self tanning products are great, because you can wear a high factor sun lotion and not have to worry about whether you get a tan.
What Is Tanologist?
Lottie Tomlinson, the creator of Tanologist, coined the word herself. She has always called herself a Tanologist. But what does that even mean? According to Lottie, it’s someone who happily dubs them-self a tanning geek.
Lottie is a makeup artist and beauty enthusiast, and has always loved experimenting, especially when it came to tanning. She would mix tans into foundations, moisturizers, anything she could think of.
However, Lottie found that no matter what she tried, she never got that glowing, natural, flawless finish she so craved. She also found that many fake tans left her skin damaged. Breakouts, dry skin, clogged pores, and that horrid fake tan smell. Lottie was done with all of it. So, she decided to create products that lived up to her own high standards.
Lottie’s wide range of products deliver what she was missing in the various products she used to rely on. That means, clean, streak-free results that leave you glowing inside and out.
Referred to as the future of self-tanning, Lottie’s products are easy and fun to use for all the tanologists out there!
What Tanologist Offers – A Review
Tanologists impressive range offers a little something for everyone, so let’s break down and review what options consumers have when purchasing products from Tanologist.
Firstly, consumers can choose between light, medium, and dark shades.
Then there are options to choose gradual products. This type of tan gives users complete control over their glow and is perfect for beginners. The rules are simple, the more you add, the darker the shade. The gradual products are infused with plenty of hydrating, skin loving ingredients to keep you healthy and glowing.
The gradual tan section comes with two options:
1) Tanologist Self Tan Overnight Oil
This beginner friendly tan is made for your face to be applied before sleep, and that’s all there is to it. Your skin will supercharge while you get your beauty sleep, leaving you with glowing skin in the morning.
2) Gradual Tan Lotion
This product works like a daily moisturiser and promises hassle free, easy and even sun-kissed skin that develops over time. Once the desired tan is achieved it will last for about a week and also fade evenly and naturally, exactly the way a real tan would!
Here are a selection of products Tanologist offer across their range.
Tanologist offers many additional products, meaning you can tan however you want whenever you want.
Tanologist Drops Review

Tanologist drops come in light, medium, and dark, are suitable for face and body, and perfect for sensitive skin.
The tanning drops are water based and vitamin infused Tanologist drops come in either light, medium or darker shades depending on your skin tone and how dark you would like your tan to look.
Most users find these drops offer a natural looking tan and a hint of glowing skin. You can apply these drops with lotion onto your face and body.
The Tanologist drops apply much more evenly and smoothly onto your face where there is a smaller area of skin, compared with application onto your arms or legs.
Tanologist water – express tan

Transparent self-tan water gives consumers a super hydrated and hyper real glow for a super low price. You can expect results in 1-4 hours. The longer you leave it on, the darker the tan. What makes this formula even more special is that the ingredients are organic, cruelty free and vegan.
With the Tanologist water spray tan you are spraying a water based tanning formula onto your skin that also hydrates your skin a little. The formula is super light weight, isn’t oily and doesn’t stick onto your skin like some tanning lotions.
You can choose from tones ranging from light to dark, depending on your natural skin tone colour. Leave the formula on your skin for between 1 and 4 hours and then rinse your body in the shower. This isn’t a strong tanning lotion and is more of a pre-tan primer.
If you are looking for a light tan Tanologist water offers that along with an almost odorless scent. The formula won’t clog pores or stains clothing and bed sheets which makes the whole self- tanning experience much simpler.

Not a fan of serums or water-based products? Tanologist offers self-tanning mousse in light, medium, dark, and extra dark shades. They claim that the mousse gives you much more control of the shade of tan you are looking for, across a range of 12 shades, depending on how long you leave the mousse on your skin.
Once applied and washed off, the glow will usually last for up to one week, gradually fading over time.
Again the formula is hydrating and spread evenly and works well to even out any existing tan lines. A transparent formula means you won’t stain your clothing or bedding which is always a nice feeling. You can apply the formula on both your body and face because it has dermatological approval and hydrating ingredients.
Be sure to also use a good quality sunscreen like coola or supergoop when you are exposing yourself to the sun because these sprays don’t protect you from the sun.
Tanologist Instant Tan
Can’t be bothered to wait a few hours? Need a quick temporary tan? Tanologist has your back. Their zero commitment express essentials provide a 24-hour instant tan that easily washes off with warm water.
Tanologist mousse vs water
Tanologist water is a super hydrating tanning water that offers a glowing tan that is achieved by applying a water based formula onto your skin. The Tanologist mousse is also hydrating, transparent and spreads evenly across your skin to even out your tan lines and create a smooth lightly bronzed layer of skin.
The mousse is a foam based self tanning formula that is more expensive than the water spray tan but offers the option of leaving it on longer and creating a wider range of shades depending on how dark you want your tan to be.
Can you sleep with tanologist on?
You can sleep with Tanologist on but I wouldn’t recommend that you do. Even though most of these tanning formulas are transparent and won’t ruin your bed sheets, while you sleep you can’t control the length of time you leave the lotion on before washing it off.
Sleeping while the tanning lotion is still setting means that you could end up with a much darker tan than you’d expect and the formula may become sticky and irritate your skin if you don’t wash it off as the instructions say.
How long does Tanologist last?
Tanologist self tanning formulas last up to 7 days but after the formula has developed on your skin it will become less bronze and glowing after 3-4 days, so you should reapply if you want to maintain the same level of tan and glow after those first 3 or 4 days.
Tanologist review summary
Tanologist self tanning products are perfect for beginners and girls more experienced with self-tanning. Beginners will benefit from the easy to apply, streak free formulas that don’t punish your inexperience if you choose the wrong skin tone.
Instead, the formulas adapt to the length of time you leave the tanning lotion, water or mousse on your skin and therefore you have more freedom to choose when to wash it off and achieve that perfect glowing tan.
If you have sensitive skin Tanologist water is one of my favourite products this brand sell. The formula is light, sprays on and is transparent so won’t leave those unwanted fake tan stains on your clothes.
Tanologist drops are a similar consistency and are infused with vitamins I hope will also nourish my skin as I tan… bonus!.
