White dress makeup | How to choose makeup with a white dress

Summer is coming and it’s nearly time to put on you favourite white dresses and makeup to match, but you can’t decide what makeup to wear because neutral white outfits allow you to use almost any makeup colours and styles.

Don’t worry I’m going to make your choice easy by giving you a few simple tips and showing you some of my favourite makeup that I like to match with a white dress.

Choosing makeup with a white dress on isn’t easy because white is a neutral colour and you can’t go overboard with bold colourful makeup otherwise your face will stand out.

I like to create a gentle look when i’m wearing my favourite casual everyday white dresses and even if it’s your prom night or you are attending a fancy dinner party, you can’t go wild, splattering your cosmetics collection onto your skin and looking like a circus clown. Trust me, with a white dress this can happen quickly.

Face makeup ideas to compliment a white dress

A white coloured dress always draws more attention onto your face. This is great if you have a lovely skin tone and beautiful blend of makeup.

I used to always make the mistake of not prepping my skin or using a face cleansing brush before I applied foundation and I never quite got that natural flawless look.

Now I probably spend too much time using a cleanser, moisturising and then applying primer which helps my foundation stay on my skin for longer and I feel like coverage improves a little too and I edge a little closer to a flawless finish.

…Well, maybe not always but my skin feels better after i prime it and I feel better knowing I have taken a little more care.

What blusher looks fabulous when wearing a white outfit

Applying soft blusher along the contours of your cheeks  works nicely to bring a gentle natural glow.

Some makeup artists prefer to avoid blush altogether because it can be hard to get the balance right and as I’ve done many times, you can end up creating imbalance across your face makeup where the blusher becomes overpowering or cancels out your eye shadow.

If you don’t usually wear blusher or you haven’t had much experience consider a finishing powder which can either tone down your shinier foundations or oily skin by mattifying.

Strong facial features in your cheek area or nose allow for a little more makeup to be applied. You can reduce how much your nose, cheek or other features stand out by using blusher.

On your cheeks I always use a light cream blush in a soft colour like peach or light orange but with a white outfit you are free to experiment and choose any colours.

Be careful to always match your skin tone, blusher should never match your clothing unless you want to look like an oompa loompa.

This Milani Baked Blush is one of my favourite blushers. The Luminoso colour tone is a very light peach and the formula is silky smooth.

How to choose the right foundation to match a white dress

The first rule of foundation application is that you don’t want it to be obvious you are wearing foundation.

I know it’s nice to hide the dreaded pimples and blemishes but if your face announces to the whole world that you are wearing foundation then you’ve applied way too much coverage and there aren’t many situations in the beauty world where that’s a good look.

With a white dress my personal preference is to use a light foundation that doesn’t hide my natural skin colour.

One of my favourite foundations to use with white outfits is the Armani luminous silk foundation and as an alternative the Koh Gen Doh aqua foundation is also beautiful.

Make sure you choose a tone that matches your skin colour and if you have very white skin a few shades darker will also blend well. Both these liquid foundations allow your natural skin tone to appear through them but still manage to produce a hint of glow and hide blemishes and flaws well without feeling like you are wearing a thick mask.

These two foundations also give a slight illuminating glow to your skin but if you want that sun-kissed appearance add a little bronzer. This can be applied to your neck, cheeks or forehead but must be blended well to match your foundation.

Eye Makeup with a white dress ( make your eyes gently pop, not drop )

women wearing eye makeup

I love to make my eyes pop out with a beautiful tone and with a white dress you have a wide choice of colours to choose from. Neutral tone clothing is the easiest to match eye makeup with, you have no fear of the dreaded one colour combo from head to toe, popping up.

Choose an eye makeup palette with earthy natural nude tones if you like a more sophisticated and classy look. If you don’t have many earthy tones in your eye shadow palettes then this palette from lamora is a cheap option for getting started and experimenting with a choice of 16 different colours.

All of the colour choices are soft, feminine and gentle so are much easier to work with and match with your foundation and blusher. You can play around with different tones of brown and rose pigments.

Even if you are looking for eyes that pop out, make sure you do so ever so slightly because a neutral white dress means all your other features will be highlighted if you draw attention to them.

There are so many neutral eye shadow palettes to choose from with most beauty brands creating neutral brown smokey and earthy palettes so you can have fun finding one to match your gorgeous white dresses.

Don’t be afraid to play around with pink shades of eye shadow too and a glowing shimmer or sparkle adds a touch of glamour. You should try to use the same eye shadow product for covering the line on your lower and upper lash because then your eye contrasts with the colours and pops out more.

If you like you can also use an eyeliner but don’t forget to sharpen your eyebrow pencils.

This video has some great advice about how to apply eye shadow perfectly. Hopefully these tips will also help you create the perfect eye makeup to go with your white dresses.

Choosing the right Lipstick – Lip colour that compliments your white dress

A neutral dress gives you lots of freedom with your lip colour choices so the most important thing is to make sure the colour compliments your skin tone and other face makeup you’ve applied so you can achieve that beautifully feminine look.

Choosing lipstick colour doesn’t depend as much on your outfit as it does on your skin tone. If you have very pale white skin then you can choose red, pin and orange lip stick or lip balm colours. For darker skin more purple or deeper red coloured lips look more bold and beautiful.

Recently I bought the Maybelline Colour sensational lipstick that comes in a range of colours. I love it because of the shea butter that makes it feel really soft and luscious on my lips.

Conclusion – Final thoughts about makeup to match your white dress

There are so many different styles of makeup you can apply when wearing a white dress. We recently reviewed Natasha Denona and Pat Mcgrath eye shadows and they have some beautiful shades to match your white dress.

A white dress gives you that freedom to play around with colours that only comes with neutral tone clothing. However, always be aware that anything you do apply onto your face and the overall tone of your cosmetics will stand out that much more against your white clothing so you have to be careful.

Most mistakes are made when foundation doesn’t match your natural skin tone, too much blusher is applied or your eyes don’t pop out at all. It is so easy to overdo colour tones and lose the flow between the different elements that work together on your face.

Being able to match eye colour, foundation, blusher, lipstick and bronzer takes a lot of skill. The more you try to adjust for any mistakes you make during application usually results in some features becoming overpowering to compensate for those mistakes.

Try to keep your makeup simple when wearing a white dress and make small adjustments and most importantly have fun! learning about makeup and fashion is a fun process and there is always something new to learn.
